Would You Ever Consider Cosmetic Surgery?

16 November 2009 One Comment

If given an opportunity, which part of your face would you like to enhance or beautify? What should you be careful of, when embarking aesthetic treatments? Is plastic surgery still a taboo topic?

Just last week, we’ve invited by omy.sg to attend an exclusive face-to-face talk with Korea’s leading maxillofacial surgeons, Dr Moon Hyoung Jin. Dr Low Chai Ling, a pioneer in the medical aesthetics field,  joins him in discussing how Asian women are redefining beauty and volume replacement as a natural beauty transformation.

We all love to see pretty girls. Whenever I see a pretty girl that walks past, I ogle. Like a man. haha. I absolutely love the look of some Korean stars! Flawless porcelain skin and alluring pout lips. Some of them are my favorites in the video below.

“Koreans go for cosmetic sugery to boost self confidence, look attractive, seek better job prospects and find potential partners,” observed Dr. Moon

According to Dr. Moon, here are some reasons why Koreans undergo cosmetic surgery

  • For self-confidence
  • to fulfill one’s desire of looking beautiful
  • to get a better paid job
  • to find that Mr Right
  • For the men, it’s all about getting a better-paid job

Just last night, I had a quick chat with my South Korean friend over Facebook and learnt that aesthetic treatments like double eyelids, filler injections are popular birthday presents from parents to children! Most of them have their first surgery at an early age of 21.(*shocked)

Dr. Moon shares with us on this guy that came and wish to make his cheeks fuller. His main reason of cheek augmentation was to get a better-paid job. Apparently, its a general perception among Koreans that external beauty is an important factor for success.

When I saw the spotless-looking face, I thought, “He is a good-looker alright.” In South Korea, men with sunken cheeks does not look very appealing. Seriously I thought only qualifications will land you a job. Probably, with a better-looking face, you’ll get a better-paid job. What do you think?

Instinctively, I turned to my guy’s face and had a long hard stare at his cheeks. “Lucky you, you’ve got a well-paid job.” (giggles) As what I always believed in, beauty is the eye of the beholder.

The truth is, there is nothing wrong with aging and owning that wisdom lines (that is what Mum proudly declares!) All I am asking for is to age gracefully. Sometimes you wish you had that 8 hours of beauty sleep. But as we age with time, somehow beauty sleep doesn’t seem to work anymore. Nasolbial folds (the unsightly lines that run from the corner of the mouth that makes one look old and weary) starts to appear around the mouth. Fine lines starts to surface around your cheery eyes.

I think I may have found one of the best kept secrets of looking naturally beautiful.

Dr Low, the founder and Medical Director of Sloane Clinic, (can you believe that she is already a mum of 2 lovely kids?) highlighted on the importance of using, safe and tested products. If you ever go to one, do ask the following useful questions for any injectable product that is being administered by a doctor.

  • What clinical studies have it undergone?
  • How many treatments has this product been used in?
  • Has the product been approved by regulatory authorities like the USFDA?
  • How much experience does the doctor have with these products?

Both doctors, highlighted Restylane as an example of a product that has undergone stringent tests and proven to be safe. Its been used globally by qualified dermatologists and aesthetic doctors since 1996.

What’s Restylane?

Its is one of the world’s most widely used dermal fillers, and has been safely used in more than 10 million treatments worldwide. It is based on hyaluronic acid, a compound that occurs naturally within the human body. This is a something new that I’ve learn and it sound re-assuring to hear that. Its properties allows it to fill out wrinkles and line, get a fuller lip and facial contouring and rejuvenation of the skin!

After the Q & A, we head to their spotless clean and flora-scented room, where the filler injection is administered by Dr Low. Okay, I must say I did cringe when I saw the needle inserting into the skin. Like what people say — no pain, no gain.

What an interesting session! I’ll definitely consider going for one jab at my cheeks, just to make myself feel happier and prettier too! And if someone does compliment my radiant looks, I will proudly tell them I had a jab and that is if everything turns out well. The results will last from 12 - 18 months, and it depends alot on individual skin tone. Like to end this post with photos of before and after. Some of them have an entirely different look!

The above is not a paid ad. We attended the event with thanks to OMY.sg. We’re just in love with their Kim Chi Hot Noodles and Korean stars! (:

hi like to share my experience. btw, i am a average looking local gal. i never had luck with job finding and i believe that it could be my droopy eyes that doesn’t give a good impression during my interview.

i decided to enhance my eyes and went for a pair of double eye-lids. flew to korea a couple of years back and i’m so glad that i went for it. it sounds absurd and vain initially.. and my family friends are against it.. but after sitting in bed and resting (i did have swollen eyes and its painful) it gave me the confidence and sparkle my eyes never had before. i am working comfortably as a assistant sales manager. When new found friends compliments my set of eyes, i proudly reveal to them that I had them ‘made’.

all i am saying is that if cosmetic surgery make you feel better and look better, why not? Also, please go to a reputable clinic and ensure that you know what you’ll be getting eventually. Thanks for sharing this post. :)
