GirlTalk : Kawaii! School Uniform!

17 April 2008 3 Comments

While I was at Sengkang CP (Compass Point) the other day, munching on my fav. sardine curry puff, a group of school girls in brown checkered uniform breeze past me. At that moment, I was amazed that nowadays school uniforms nowadays look hip and *haps (happening)!

In fact, today I saw another group today, this time round, even more *haps! with dark blue top and knee length dark checkered flared skirt(gorgeous!) seriously, I dun mind wearing on weekends to town! I wasn’t too sure which school they were from.. but will definitely ask them if I ever see them again. If anyone knows, pls let me know.. :)

Thinking about it again, it somehow look like Japanese uniforms to me and I somehow found something similar online, just that ours is a conservative version; its a keen length skirt, pleated too i think. The colors are similar!

My reaction is kinda of ‘violent’ towards such small stuff, its because I have been working too hard in my fulltime routine job! and that I missed out on such fine prettty design details. This crazy new discovery made me so excited that I started to surf around for some of the Singapore school uniforms. To my dismay… I can’t seem to find any other checkered uniform….until..

Alas! I manage to find a picture of Compassvale Secondary, the one with the whole uniform checkered! I was thrilled to find it…That is why i LUV the internet so much!!

Yes! even its in plain beige/brown color, it definitely looked timeless. I guess the color does project that ‘down-to-earth’ look and the pretty pointed collar which lines up from the top to the bottom breaks up that pattern area to give definition to the entire body. The pic look like its tartan and gingham checkered style at the same time, in anycase, its so pretty that I wanna keep a record of the checkered school uniforms here.. if anyone has any school uniform to share, lemme know! :)

What a fresh take on school uniforms! I guess their uniform has been around for at least 5 years maybe? Correct me if I am wrong yeah. :)

Browsing through my childhood photo album, my first fashion check is during my kindergarten school days! Its my all time fav green with white color checks! To divert abit, just in case you are wondering, heee, fyi I am a girl. I’ve got natural big curls, hence need to cut short hair to keep my ‘beehive’ hair in place(think Marge Simpson)

To share some background information checks, squares, or rather Classic Checks, they are one of the biggest fascination for me as an design individual. Its seen everywhere; on my dad’s shirt prints, my mum’s table cloth to my dog’s socks. To give a nutshell on checks, how a check is created is by simply varying the colors on the warp and weft results in a checked pattern.

The Burberry Check

Classic checks are know by name: the Burberry Check, the signature of the celebrated British fashion house!

1920s: The Burberry Check was first used to line Burberry trenchcoat

1960s: The Check was extended to accessories

1980s: The Check has been used in different colors. The distinctive Check has been synonymous with the Burberry for decades.. and

1990s: It was first registered as a trademark

To reflect the fact that the Check remains distinctive of Burberry, even when used in colors other than the classic colors of camel, red, white and black, the Burberry Check is also registered as a trademark without any color limitations.

I guess I will make time to write something on Japanese school uniforms! More coming up…

It is amazing how times have changed. The school uniforms when I was a child were no where near stylish as the ones the kids wear now.
